Endur'O — Piped Water Pilot.
Madagascar ranks among the world's most water-insecure nations, with only 48% of the population having access to improved water sources — a figure that falls to just 9% in rural areas. In the absence of safe drinking water, households routinely boil water using firewood or charcoal, driving significant deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and a profound burden of waterborne disease.
SaniTap is addressing this cycle at its root in the Moramanga region — rehabilitating existing community water points and installing solar-powered, automated water kiosks (NATURANO Smartap kiosks). Each kiosk draws clean water from existing boreholes, purifies it, and dispenses it around the clock at affordable prices. The technology is designed, manufactured, and serviced entirely within Madagascar.
As households no longer need to burn biomass to sanitise water, the project eliminates a meaningful and measurable source of carbon emissions. Verified emissions reductions are certified under Gold Standard to generate carbon credits that continue to fund professional maintenance of every kiosk — making the clean water service genuinely sustainable over the long term.
Riparian bamboo carbon sequestration.
Madagascar is in the grip of one of the world's most severe erosion crises. Decades of deforestation and soil degradation have left riverbanks critically exposed, causing waterways to carry vast quantities of sediment downstream each year — stripping communities of productive agricultural land, silting up infrastructure, and degrading watershed health.
Bamboo offers a compelling natural solution. Its deep, dense root systems stabilise riverbanks rapidly and effectively, halting erosion while restoring ecological resilience and generating a renewable biomass resource that sequesters carbon dioxide and could produce carbon credits over time.
SaniTap developed a pilot project across three climatically distinct regions of Madagascar — a tropical humid zone, an intermediate zone, and a dry arid zone — planting over 3,000 bamboo plants across three species to understand which approaches perform best in each environment. The pilot is the foundation for a national-scale riverbank restoration programme.
Biochar carbon credit feasibility study.
Biochar is a stable, carbon-rich material produced by heating organic waste at high temperatures in low-oxygen conditions. It has significant potential as a long-duration carbon removal solution — when incorporated into soil, it sequesters carbon for hundreds of years while improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
SaniTap conducted a feasibility study to assess whether biochar production can be developed into a credible, financially-sustainable carbon credit project in Madagascar. The study evaluated the availability of suitable organic feedstocks, the viability of local production, and the pathway to certification under a recognised carbon standard.
